College and Grad School

I attended Bethel College (now University) from 1962 to 1966. I majored in Anthropology with minor areas of Greek and Ancient Near East Studies. I also played football and ran track. I was captain of the football team my senior year. Then I studied in the Anthropology Department of the University of Minnesota, earning a Master's degree in 1968, and a Ph.D. in 1972. My Master's research was in northern Minnesota on the Leech Lake and Red Lake reservations. My doctoral fieldwork involved 18 months (1969-1970) living on Arno Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
